Not always the logical choice
Recently, I received a home insurance renewal form from a local insurance company in the post. Much to my surprise, even though no claims had been made in the lifetime of the policy, they were still trying to sting me for £X + 11ish%.
Full disclosure, I have no idea of the complexities behind how they come up with a renewal figure, I imagine there are numerous factors, such as other people claiming, increased prices and of course brexit. However, the cynic in me imagines that it is an automated process increasing the price at the optimal level to not scare too many customers away but also rinsing the customers too busy/rich enough to not go to the effort of switching.
Needless to say, I looked elsewhere, which to be fair were not massively dissimilar to the original quote, however the majority were lower. Since when was it good business to punish your existing customers for remaining loyal?
In any case, the point of this rant is that I found a significantly better deal (about a third of the cost for more cover!) with Aviva. I was concerned that there would be some small print in the policy that excludes Guernsey, similar to Life insurance from Aviva which you need to get through a broker. However, after some searching I couldnt find anything conclusive so ended up contacting Aviva for confirmation. This is the response I got:
So there you go, if you live in Guernsey and need a quote for home insurance give Aviva a try.
Further disclosure: I have not received any incentives to recommend Aviva. Also, I have not yet filed a claim with Aviva so cannot be absolutely certain that there won’t be a problem making a claim at a later stage. As above, should be fine, but I accept no liability if it is not!
Update: This document obtained from https://www.aviva.co.uk/insurance/home-products/home-insurance/ specifically mentions Channel Islands – so should be fine.
